A Day in London: North of the River Edition

London, the bustling capital of England, is a city that never fails to captivate its visitors with its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant atmosphere. Today, we embark on a journey through the northern part of the city, exploring iconic landmarks, and beautiful parks, and indulging in some delicious food, topped off with a relaxing float session at Floatworks Angel, this guide will ensure you have an unforgettable experience. So, grab your walking shoes and let’s dive into a day in London, North of the River Edition!

Morning

Our adventure begins at the majestic Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the British monarch. As you stroll through the picturesque St James Park, take a moment to admire the serene lake, charming bridges, and the vibrant flora that surrounds you. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, including pelicans, ducks, and squirrels, making it a perfect spot for some wildlife photography.

Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey, via St. James Park: 17 mins walk

Next, we make our way to Westminster Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most significant religious buildings in the United Kingdom. Marvel at its Gothic architecture and explore the grandeur of the interior, where numerous royal weddings, coronations, and funerals have taken place throughout history.

Westminster Abbey to Trafalgar Square: 14 mins walk

Lunch

As you walk along Parliament Street, passing The Parliament, you will also see Downing Street on your left-hand side, the home of the Prime Minister. As hunger strikes, we head towards Trafalgar Square, a bustling hub in the heart of London. Here, you’ll find an array of cafes and restaurants offering a diverse range of cuisines. Soho, a vibrant neighbourhood known for its lively atmosphere and culinary delights, is just a stone’s throw away. Wander through its narrow streets and discover hidden gems, from trendy cafes to traditional British pubs.

We highly recommend Hoppers on Frith Street, it is a Sri Lankan restaurant in Soho and it’s one of the best places anywhere in town to eat delicious spicy things. And even if you’re not an expert in Sri Lankan food, it’s familiar enough to immediately understand, but also different enough from standard Indian or Bangladeshi cuisine to feel adventurous and exciting.

For a more relaxed lunch experience, Covent Garden is the perfect choice. This charming area is renowned for its covered market, street performers, and a plethora of dining options. Indulge in a delicious meal while soaking in the lively ambience of this cultural hotspot.

Covent Garden to St. Paul’s, via The Strand: 15 mins bus ride (Bus no. 15, 26 or 76)

Afternoon

After refuelling, we hop on one of London’s iconic red buses, either the number 15, 26, or 76, and embark on a scenic journey along The Strand. As we make our way towards Saint Paul’s Cathedral, keep your eyes peeled for historic landmarks such as Somerset House and the Royal Courts of Justice.

Arriving at Saint Paul’s Cathedral, prepare to be awestruck by its magnificent dome and stunning interior. Climb to the top of the dome for breathtaking panoramic views of the city, or explore the crypt, where many notable figures, including Sir Christopher Wren, the architect of the cathedral, are buried.

Bank to Angel: 15 mins on the Underground Northern Line

Evening

To end our day on a tranquil note and to rest your weary feet, we head to Floatworks Angel, where you float effortlessly in a pod filled with warm Epsom salt water, allowing your mind and body to relax and rejuvenate. The experienced staff will guide you through the process, ensuring you have a comfortable and enjoyable session. This immersive experience is the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures.
